The Kitchen Triangle Theory
Ever heard of the kitchen triangle? See the above image. Basically, it involves placement of kitchen appliances, stoves, counter tops and cabinets that more or less form a triangle, meaning that when in the kitchen doing kitchen-y stuff, your movement will be limited to within that triangle for all the cooking that will happen within that kitchen.
Too many I have seen that place the fridge at some stupid angle, or having the sinks too far from the stove, or food supplies in another room or something in the way.
To save on money or space as a lot of Mirians would have to, you don't need to build those expensive counter tops, you could buy pretty decent carts with wheels on them that you can move about to put your ingredients or supplies in a location to make it as triangular as possible when you're in a kitchen, and then move it away to store when you're not using the kitchen, especially if space is an issue.
The above are just examples, and cannot exactly apply to your home, so do not use it as a template to copy exactly. Use practical sense, have a feel of how you want your kitchen to be laid out, see what's most logical, and lay it out according to what you think is the best. If it doesn't work out, see what is wrong, then improve it until it is optimal. This constant adjustment and improvement will lead to a layout that you will find most optimal. This should apply to not only the kitchen but other rooms as well.
Warning: this is not feng shui. But what it does is what feng shui promises you (but usually fail to deliver) - a nice, logical place that does not hinder your movements around the kitchen that makes you happier to be in and does not affect your mood or everyone else around you.
