Bay Window / Doors
One of the door designs I fully enjoy most are what are termed "Bay Doors" or "Bay Windows". Basically it's a door (or window) protruding from the walls, letting in some daylight into the room.
This simple change would create a much more interesting entrance / doorway/window, create more perceived space, and let natural light into the house.
It's not that hard to build one either, assuming the builder knows how to do it.
Far too often I have seen people spending so much money on their front doors, from making it stupid cold stainless steel or some fancy oak wood, or put whatever "fancy" designs on it, but it still looks like a flat door that usually doesn't let light in, or worse, like a prison vault. The same amount of money put into those could have easily been put into making this kind of a protrusion at the entrance, and enhance the look and feel of the house by a factor of 100x.
Of course, the naysayers will say, "buut but large windows invite breakins and burglaries!" to which I will say.. well just put the metal grills at the windows just like what you do with the rest of the darned house!
